Clare loves words. In fact, she can’t stop thinking about them. She spends every day playing with words, finding new and inventive ways to get the best out of them, to prolong the affair. From website copy to brand language consultancy, from promotional literature to creative writing, she’s been an alphabet floozy for 10 years and she’s proud of it. It’s an obsession all right, but Clare’s no fool. She knows words have many mistresses but when it’s just them, together; well, it’s pretty special.

During the research phase of our flavour Dion Star and I stumbled on something rather wonderful.

From America in the 1950s to the UK today, it seems a lot of people have fallen for asparagus.

After a couple of hours online, our computers were literally weighed down with adverts, websites and interviews all extolling the virtues of the vegetable.

“We started it in 1998, that was our introduction to it. Our first fields were harvested in 2000 so we’re in our eleventh year.

From Tresillian the road winds deep and narrow, hedges higher than eyeballs can reach. I have to stop and move a branch out of the road; the heady scent of wild garlic and bluebells mingling in the back of my throat. My little Skoda struggles to navigate the crater-like potholes, dense grass brushing the bottom of the car as I bump and sway down the ever-thinning track.
